[Tunnel Works]
1956 , Norwich (Norfolk)
Cat no. 477
The construction of the north-western intercepting sewer built under Norwich between 1956 and 1959.
Shots of the river and a team of workmen on a floating wooden platform pile driving steel sheets into the river bank. There are shots of cranes and machinery at work. A workman digs out part of the construction by hand. At the depot, concrete sewer linings are made and there is a steam railway crane at work. A large number of moulds are on the site. A man operates a steel wire cutter and bends wires into shape to form the structure of the sewer. The next sequence is filmed above ground at the junction of Dereham Road and Grapes Hill. The Barn Tavern and Regal cinema can be seen in the background. This sequence shows girders being erected for above ground tunnel work. Wagons containing spoil and waste material are hauled out of the tunnel and a concrete mixing machine is filmed. There follow general shots of the depot. More linings are made. These are all dated and the dates are shown (all are made during December, 1956). They are loaded onto a lorry. Shingle is brought in by lorry and unloaded. The camera follows it along its various shoots. The next sequence shows frogmen going down a manhole and being brought to the surface again. Containers are lowered into the tunnel shaft and spoil is removed. The final sequence shows views inside the incomplete tunnel.
