[Folk Dancing and Pageant]
1926 , Norwich (Norfolk)
Cat no. 452
A film showing a display by the English Folk Dance Society, followed by the Norwich Pageant of 1926.
Two films that have been joined. The first records folk dancing and morris dancing by the English Folk Dance Society in the grounds of Norwich Cathedral. There is a glancing shot of the Cathedral in the background. Scenes showing mixed and single sex dancing, including morris dancing are intercut throughout. The second film is of the Norwich Pageant of 21st to 24th July, 1926. Girls do a Greek nymph type dance, representing Roman Britain. There are medieval scenes including one showing the Founding of the Cathedral in 1096. Tudor scenes include a bowls match as well as civilian and military style dress. Theses scenes show Kett's Rebellion 1549, The visit Of Queen Elizabeth, 1578, The pillage of the churches, 1643 and Charles II and Sir Thomas Browne, 1671. The final scenes are a procession and a dance in eighteenth century costumes depicting a Thanksgiving After Rebellion, 1745.

Background Information
Nugent Monck wrote the following note in the Pageant Programme. In designing the Pageant for the City Of Norwich, I have taken such episodes in her history as lend themselves to dramatic or pictorial representation. Several events of greater importance, such as the granting of the Charter, do not admit of dramatic treatment, and are therefore useless in pageantry.
