Essex River
1954 , Essex (County)
Cat no. 383
An educational film showing a river developing from its source to its mouth.
The film begins with a general view of a river flowing between willows. It shows two children, Pat and David, discovering a spring in their garden. Their father helps them to trace the trickle of water from the spring to where it leaves their garden and flows into a stream. The whole family pile into a Morris car to follow the stream. They drive along lanes and through villages, none of them named. They stop at bridges to note that the stream is getting wider and larger bridges are needed to cross it. At one stage the car has to go through a ford. There is a watermill along the route. The family stop a Southend Waterworks, where they see the huge pumping machines and reservoir. At Maldon, the river meets the sea. The quays and fishing boats are seen and a fisherman sells some fish. Finally the children are seen paddling from a beach.
