Yarmouth for Health, Sunshine, Pleasure
1923 , Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Cat no. 336
A compilation of films promoting the resort of Great Yarmouth.
A publicity film for the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth with sections from different films, including a Pathe Pictorial film excerpt joined on the end. Aerial shots looking down onto the houses, roads, gardens and the seafront, including the Britannia Pier. There are boats moored on the beach. At ground level a tracking shot takes the viewer along Marine Parade. Trams, shops and delivery bicycles by the side of the road. The shot passes the Empire Cinema. Crowds are on the pavement and a car pulls out in front of the camera. These shots are taken during Carnival Week in July 1923. Marine Parade is decorated for the occasion. Pony carts, decorated for the Carnival, are filmed along with children in fancy dress. There are decorated floats and a Chinese style peanut seller with his barrel. On Central Beach, children play in the sand and in the sea whilst adults relax in deckchairs. The weather appears to be fairly cold, as no-one appears to be wearing a bathing costume and several of the boys are wearing jackets. The girls have their skirts tucked into their bloomers. Children ride of cardboard donkeys and a woman poses in one of the cartoon pictures. At the swimming pool, there are several shots of girls diving into the swimming pool. At the children's playground, several children are balanced on a see-saw. In the background the viewer can see the Lloyds signalling mast and the Revolving Tower. At the Fish Quay, salt is loaded onto a steam drifter. Men mend nets in the background. There are shots of the drifters in the harbour. A caption tells the viewer that it is Sunday and there is a shot of fishermen on the Quay posing in their Sunday best. After several shots showing the drifters in port, the next sequence shows the drifters putting out to sea at dawn. An angler fishes from the Quay as they leave. The final sequence of this film is in stencil colour and shows miscellaneous views of Great Yarmouth and the surrounding area. There are shots of the beach with holiday makes playing leap frog and bathing in the sea from a raft. There are yachts on the model boat pond. The Nelson Monument is filmed along with the Cenotaph and the gardens surrounding it. There are shots of the beach at Gorleston and a speed boat entering Gorleston Harbour. There is a shot of Caister Castle with a man feeding the ducks and finally some shots of boating in the broads. A windmill is working in the background.
