The joys of a boating holiday on the Norfolk broads
The film begins by showing scenes from everyday life; businessmen going to the office, a housewife, a man working in a packing department, a foundry and a typist. The very things people from which most need a break. These are contrasted with scenes of people sunning themselves on the beach at Yarmouth. There are several shots of boating on the broads, including many aerial shots, before the film introduces the viewer to the Grant family who are to take a holiday in a motor cruiser. The Grants are the first of the feature groups via whom the delights of the Broads are portrayed. The other is a group of three young women who take a sailing holiday. The commentary emphasises that there are over 300 classes of boat available. Therefore there is a size boat and a price to suit everyone. The Grants are shown over their cruiser. The children are fitted with life jackets and the family are shown the interior of the boat. This includes a gas cooker and electric lighting. Mr. Grant is shown how to drive the boat. there are views of the countryside taken from the boat and views of the Grants sailing. They are seen stopping at a riverside shop to buy petrol and provisions. The film shows many of the leisure attractions of the Norfolk Broads. There include fishing, swimming in the river and walking. The variation of butterflies, bird life, including herons, and wild flowers are illustrated. There are many scenes of people just generally relaxing.Places to visit include Ranworth Church, South Walsham Church, Caister Castle and Norwich. The Cathedral and close are filmed including interior shots. St. Benet's Abbey also features with shots of an artist at work. The proximity of the Broads and the coast is explained. The quiet, sandy beach at Horsey contrasts with the noise of the Pleasure Beach at Yarmouth and speed boat racing on Oulton Broad. There are scenes of a regatta and of Wroxham. The girls on the sailing holiday feature, showing how easy it is to sail a traditional yacht on the broads. If they can do it, anyone can is the message of the film. The girls are shown going to the Pleasure Boat Inn at Hickling Broad and going to a dance and barbecue in the evening. Some prints end with an additional advert inviting people to write to Blakes requesting a holiday catalogue.
