East Anglian School for Partially Sighted and Deaf Children
1965 , Gorleston (Norfolk)
Cat no. 244
Anglia Television delve into the every day experiences of teachers and students at the East Anglian school for partially sighted and deaf children.
The opening scene of this film shows the children at the Hippodrome Circus, enjoying the clowns. The commentary explains some of the difficulties they face and the background of the school - part boarder, part day pupil. The rest of the film is shot at the school and shows some of the teaching techniques and school activities. Nursery children are seen at play whilst the commentary explains that there is often no reason for deafness. A child has her hearing tested using audiometric equipment. Another teacher patiently teaches a profoundly deaf three year old a few simple words; 'car', 'apple' and 'cup'. The last of these he finds particularly difficult. The milk break serves as a chance to teach new words and improve pronunciation. The Head Teacher, Mr. Spencer Howard, is interviewed. He is ostensibly optimistic that intelligence will count for more than a child's disability. Then he reveals that a profoundly deaf child will not attain the expected standards of their age at 16 and that he expects to get them a good apprenticeship. He is full of praise for the parents of disabled children (his phrase) and outlines help that parents can give their children. There are general shots of classes at the school to conclude as the commentary explains that there are 5,000 deaf children in special needs schools.
