[Samphire Picking]

1962 , Blakeney (Norfolk)

Marshman Screw Palmer gathering samphire.

The film opens with shots across the salt marshes and then Screw Palmer, the subject of the film, is seen walking across the marshes carrying a basket and a sack. Explaining that he cannot wear water boots because he has deformed feet, Screw removes his boots and walks around the mudflats barefoot, cutting samphire and putting it in his basket. Screw explains that he likes to cut larger bunches of samphire, leaving the stalk in the ground. He recalls how prices of samphire have varied; that it will now sell for 1s. a quarter. He cycles home with his sack of his back. Screw explains that he can carry two at a time. As he cycles away he gives hints on how to cook samphire.
