Background Information

There has been some sort of ferry working across the River Blyth between Southwold and Walberswick for over seven hundred years. In the latter part of Queen Victoria's reign the ferry was fitted with a steam engine. This hauled on chains laid from bank to bank. In the late 1920s the paddle tug Pendennis towed away the old ferry and the new one The Blyth took over. This ferry worked until the company went into liquidation in 1942.
