Celebrations for the Queen's silver Jubilee in Manningtree, 1977
A record of the celebrations held in the adjoining parishes of Manningtree, Mistley, and Lawford, on the four day Jubilee Weekend of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th of June, 1977. The sequences are as follows; A children's sports day at Lawford Recreation Ground; A Tea party for pensioners at Ogilvie Hall; An evening open-air disco at Lawford Recreation ground, and A children's tea party with a Punch and Judy show in the Masonic Hall. This should have been a street party in Regent Street, but the weather was too cold. Scenes of the deserted street prepared for the party are shown. A children's party is shown, with commemorative mugs being given out by the Carnival Queen and Carnival Princesses at the Allied Breweries Social Club, Mistley. There are shots of Mistley Church, both interior and exterior, featuring the stained glass windows, the Jubilee hassocks, and a cricket match in front of the church. Also featured is The Mistley pram race, the route of which appears to have been planned to pass the maximum number of public houses. This is completed by men in drag pushing women in prams, and finishes at The Anchor Public House. There is a tug-of-war at the Brunswick House Field, Mistley. Many of the competitors are still in drag from the pram race. A street party at Springbank Avenue, Lawford. A dance at Mistley Social Club (Jubilee Day.) A Carnival Parade passes along High Street, Manningtree, including floats, bands and marching children and adults. The parade is seen arriving at the Welcome Home Field, Mistley. The Carnival Queen, Miss Avril Ainger, is seen handing out prizes to the best floats. General shots of the activities and people are followed by some sporting events and a fancy dress parade. The interior of the food tent is shown, as well as stalls etc. An evening open air dance is followed by a late night firework display. A final sequence, shot later, depicts a tree being planted to commemorate the Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the Welcome Home Field.
