A outing for the poor children of Ipswich to Glenham Hall in 1929.

Most of this film is shot before the outing left Ipswich. A group of the organisers are seen standing in front of a vehicle, they are mostly women and are carrying flags or flowers. A child appears to be making a presentation to one of the women. A lady carrying a handbag is shown standing in a field. There are shots of the children waiting in the park. A fleet of decorated cars pass. Many of these cars are featured. Some of the adults are wearing party hats. There are some scenes of the children leaving. Of the outing itself, some girls eat their packed lunch, and groups are asked to pose for the camera with some of the organisers.

Background Information

Begun in 1923, by 1929 the Poor Children's outing was catering for 2,400 children. It was believed to be the biggest event of its type in the country. The children would be taken from the Alderman Road Recreation Ground to Glemham Hall. One item in the procession was a van containing lemonade - enough to give each child two glasses. At one of the Archive film shows, a man who had been on the outings as a child gave us this information. As they went along, the children would sing this music hall song: "Don't want to be a bobby Dressed in other peoples' clothes With a belly full of fat And a sausage on his hat I don't want to be a bobby"
