Skating Championship with C. W. Horn

C.W. Horn is shown in close-up at the end. The landscape is a good example of a fenland winter scene.

Background Information

Cyril Horn, from Upwell, is usually considered to be the greatest of the inter-war Fen Skaters. He was also a champion cyclist. The Amateur Championship of Great Britain was run in 1927 for the first time since 1912. The appearance of Cyril Horn was eagerly awaited. He won in 1927 at Lingay Fen, in 1929 at Swavesey and in 1933, again at Lingay Fen. He won the international race, the Prince of Orange Bowl at Lingay Fen in 1929, the only time in his amateur skating career that this competition was run. He won the amateur 1/4 mile at Swavesey in 1929 and again at Lingay Fen in 1933. He won the Duddleston Cup at Swavesey in 1927, at Welney in 1929 and at Lingay Fen in 1933. He turned professional at the age of 35 and enjoyed moderate success even then. As late as 1947 he came second in the Professional Championship of Great Britain He won the Hayes Fisher Cup at Lingay Fen in 1940 and finished fourth in 1947. Cyril Horn competed at the Olympic Games and at the World Championships, but with no success. (See: A. Bloom, The Skaters of the Fens, published by W. Heffers and Sons Limited, Cambridge, 1958.) Lingay Fen is to the South of Cambridge between Haslingfield and Shelford. It was a popular venue because it could be flooded to order by sluice.
