Opening of the Oyster season ceremony
This sequence from a Topical Budget news film shows scenes of an oyster smack and of the Mayor performing the ceremony to open the oyster season. This was an unusual ceremony which involved drinking gin and eating gingerbread and toasting the monarch before the Town Clerk read the traditional proclamation. There are scenes of the mayor dredging for and eating an oyster. The Mayor and his attendants are in full civic regalia, showing a clear sense of occasion. All pictured in the film are male
