Background Information
Croydon was once London's main airport, before being replaced by Northolt Aerodrome, Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The site was opened in March 1920 after Beddington Aerodrome and Waddon Aerodrome were combined. Croydon was the first airport in the world to instate air traffic control. The Croydon-Le Bourget (Paris) route became the busiest in the world. Amy Johnson departed from here on her record-breaking flight to Australia and Charles Lindbergh arrived here in the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927.
