Interview with Mr Crosswaite, Movements Manager for the District, concerning his proposal for the future of Dawdy’s Level Crossing. He is looking at ways to reduce the costs of running the level crossing. There are 43 level crossings on the line, and some of which have had their crossing keepers withdrawn from use. The proposals for the crossing means using flashing lights and half-barriers and withdrawing the use of a crossing keeper. People at the crossing, consisting of users of the level crossing, National Farmer’s Union representatives, and council representatives, state their objections to the proposed plans. They are not happy at the proposal for an un-manned level crossing. Mr Newson, the parish council representative, argues that cattle moving to the Carlton Marshes would be put in danger should the crossing be half-barriered and un-manned. Mr Greenacre, a farmer, also argues the crossing must have a gate here for the safety of the cattle. Mr [Cadey], also a farmer, says his concern is for the safety of the children using the crossing. This film was transmitted to accompany a BBC East news story as part of the regional news broadcast.
