BBC Look East report on the re-housing of Vietnamese refugees.
Tony Scase reports from Peterborough, where the local community has worked together to provide suitable housing and a warm welcome to Vietnamese refugees who fled their country after the fall of Saigon. A group of sixth form girls are shown fitting out a local authority house, decorating a Christmas tree and wrapping gifts. Two of the girls are interviewed about their involvement in the housing project, praising the support of local businesses. June Hurford, a representative from the local authority housing association, praises the 'tremendous goodwill' of the public, despite some opposition from people already on the housing waiting list. Peterborough councillor Peter Swift is equally positive, talking about offers of work for the Vietnamese and their willingness to take on any role. One of the families is shown enjoying their new home, and the father thanks the community from 'deep in his heart' as they take the first step towards a life filled with 'peace and freedom'.
