May Day Sports
1979 , Pulham Market (Norfolk)
Cat no. 214589
A film showing the events of a village May Day Sports celebration in 1979.
The film opens with a cartoon drawing of children racing with the title ‘May Day Sports 1979’ handwritten across it. It cuts to the tradition of children dancing around a maypole on a village green in celebration of May Day. It then proceeds to show the wide variety of races and sports that took place throughout the day. After maypole dancing, the film captures an obstacle course in which the contestants have a sack race and then cycle to the finish line, all whilst trying not to drop a water balloon. It shows each person cross the finish line with families standing at the side cheering them on, capturing the community spirit. It then cuts to goal shooting activities, more obstacle races, tug of war and a children’s football match. The final scenes depict people racing in wellies filled up with water whilst onlookers wave flags by the finish line, followed by a game of throw and catch.
