Proposal to Amalgamate Cromer and Sheringham Councils
1964 , Norfolk (County)
Cat no. 214106
Interviews from an Anglia Television report on proposals to amalgamate two Norfolk urban districts.
Fearing a loss of status in an upcoming Norfolk County Council review of the local government system, the Cromer and Sheringham Urban Districts propose an amalgamation. Mr Stowman, a council representative, discusses the upcoming N.C.C. review and the importance of the proposal to the holiday trade in the area, believing the amalgamation will give the area a greater impetus and importance. He also discusses possible names for the amalgamated council and addresses previous competition and conflict between the two existing authorities. On the streets of Cromer and Sheringham, the Anglia correspondent gauges the opinion of the general public. A young woman from Sheringham sees them as two very separate towns, expressing her dislike for Cromer. A young man, meanwhile, sees it as a sensible idea for the two small towns to amalgamate, but others are not so sure. An older man doesn't think it will work very well, citing the rivalry between the two towns, whilst an older woman from Sheringham goes much further, calling the proposals 'shocking', claiming that people there 'detest' those from Cromer, whom she 'loathes' and believes to be a different type of people all together.
