Car Breaker's Yard
1961 , Bawsey (Norfolk)
Cat no. 213925
Vision from an Anglia Television news item about car breakers.
A vintage saloon car struggles along a country lane. Overtaken by a more modern vehicle, it comes to a shuddering halt, smoke billowing from the engine. Lifting the bonnet, the driver realises his car is finally finished and summons a passing tow truck. The car is towed to Peter Bacon's scrapyard in Bawsey, Norfolk, where the driver walks behind with a wreath, imitating a funeral procession. Laying the wreath on the bonnet, the driver walks away, allowing car breakers to get to work dismantling his car. Beginning with the sheels and headlights, the breakers remove interior fittings before moving on to the engine bay. Once everything of resale value has been removed, the shell of the car is burnt, before arc welders are employed to break it up into scrap metal. Resigned to the fate of his trusty vintage saloon, the driver purchases a modern car, driving it away as the demolition of his old vehicle continues.
