Beccles Carnival Parade
1964 , Beccles (Suffolk)
Cat no. 213223
Anglia News coverage of Beccles’ Carnival Parade featuring pigeons, gymnasts and weightlifters.
Opens with a flock of pigeons and doves being set free from cages, presumably to mark the start of a pigeon race. It is carnival time in Beccles and the remaining coverage features the many participants and decorated floats that proceed along Exchange Square. Visitors line the streets to cheer on the procession, and some wave from first floor windows, including from above the “Frank Foster” and “National Stores” buildings. The travelling parade includes; a drumming marching band; performing gymnasts and weightlifters aboard a float; a second float’s representation of a pilgrimage; marching Harlequin clowns complete with grotesquely oversized papier mache heads; a pony and cart carrying Miss Beccles and her princesses; a trio of Arabian Knights on horseback; and finally a promotional float advertising a service that goes the extra mile to deliver. That is, a purpose-built lighthouse aboard a trailer and accompanied by a costumed milkman.
