Navy Cup Final: HMS Ganges v. HMS Ariel

1961 , Ipswich (Suffolk)

An Anglia Television report on the 1961 Navy Cup Final between HMS Ganges and HMS Ariel, with action taking place at the home of Ipswich Town FC, Portman Road.

HMS Ganges kick off what is essentially a home final, having travelled from their nearby shore establishment at Shotley. HMS Ariel, on the other hand, had travelled from their base near Portsmouth. Early exchanges are watched by a large group of uniformed sailors from Ganges, who make up most of the small crowd in attendance. Returning to the action, an Ariel player has his shot deflected wide. A quickly taken corner is easily cleared by Ganges, who launch a counter attack. Ganges sailors in the crowd are shown once again, and the film concludes with a quickly taken Ariel free kick which is easily dealt with by the Ganges goalkeeper.

Background Information

I am quite certain this is the Cup Final, because the two clubs would not have played each other during the course of a normal season, except in the cup, and online records [http://www.royalmarinesfootball.co.uk/navy-cup.html] suggest that in the 1961 final, HMS Ariel beat HMS Ganges 5-2 AET. The finals were usually played in the Portsmouth area (where most naval regiments are based), but the above website does not list a venue for 1961, but the venue here is certainly Portman Road. Also, it would seem unusual for Anglia TV to cover a normal Navy League/Cup game, which makes it even more likely to be the final.
