In and Around

1955 - 1963

Home movie and amateur travelogue.

A travelogue and home movie collection by amateur filmmaker Mr Collings, who co-founded the Collings Brothers agricultural firm in Cambridgeshire. Beginning in Cavendish, Suffolk's 'Best Kept Village', Collings shows views across the village green to the Five Bells pub, Church of St Mary and the Bull Inn, and visits the Little Stores and Nether Hall. A holiday on the Cambridgeshire fens is followed by action from an agricultural show, with animal demonstrations, displays, parades and horse trials. The Cambridgeshire Harriers Hunt Club host a point-to-point race meeting at Cottenham, with numerous races shown as well as horses paraded in the winners circle. A visit to the south coast of England includes views of Dover Castle on the way to Bournemouth, where Collings shows clifftop views, the funicular cliff railways and views of the town centre, including the Pavilion buildings. A 1955 visit to Stonehenge is followed by views of Tudor architecture in the Essex village of Thaxted and more modern constructions, before the film concludes with shots of the family at home.
