Animated Matches Playing Volleyball

1899 , St Albans (Hertfordshire)

Stop-motion animation of matchstick men playing volleyball, by Hertfordshire film pioneer Arthur Melbourne-Cooper.

A group of matchstick men play a game of volleyball in this stop-motion animation by pioneering filmmaker Arthur Melbourne-Cooper, originally produced to promote Bryant & May brand matches. Three matchstick men begin their game, during which one of them is cut in half by the ball. Having pulled himself together, the trio are joined by a further two matchstick men. A wild hit results in the ball going high in the air leaving the group confused. When the ball finally returns, the matchstick men return to their frantic game until one of the men loses his arm in the net and the others faint. The last standing matchstick man pulls the arm from the net, causing it to collapse on top of them.
