[Rabies Contamination in Newmarket]

1970 , Newmarket (Suffolk)

A mix of mute images and interviews from a BBC Look East report on an outbreak of rabies in Suffolk.

A series of interviews with residents and officials following the death of a dog in Newmarket from rabies contamination. The police go from door to door collecting information and giving advice to local residents, and a woman is interviewed about a connection between her pet and the infected dog. Although her dog was bitten by the rabid dog approximately six week previous, it has shown no sign of problems since then, and police have advised her to keep a close eye on her dogs and keep them on a lead if possible. Another local resident voices his concerns suggesting the bitten dog should be put down, whilst the Chief Inspector of the local police plays down concerns, suggesting they are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture. At the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, an official gives advice about the virus, plays down the risk to racehorses and says he remains satisfied with the levels of monitoring, regulation and containment currently in place.
