Problems of the Norfolk Broads
c. 1948 , Norfolk Broads (Norfolk)
Cat no. 9526
A campaign film highlighting the threats to the Norfolk Broads in the late 1940s.
Depicting the contrasting fortunes of the Norfolk broadlands in the late 1940s, this campaigning amateur film urges immediate action to save them for future generations. The threats facing the Broads are detailed in a series of newspaper cuttings which are illustrated with examples of neglect. The well-kept, established homes on the edge of the Broads are contrasted with the shacks and tin sheds which now clutter its banks, whilst the uninhibited sailing areas of Wroxham Broad are compared with other waterways choked by neglected reedbeds. Further neglect is found amongst the abandoned staithes, moorings and quay headings which threaten to damage craft and endanger Broads users. Problems of access are also highlighted, particularly the issue of 'private' broads. Wide in its scope but clear in its aims, the film ends with a very specific plea to those controlling the future of the Broads: 'This natural heritage can be saved. Your move Gentlemen!'
