Beautiful Joe

c. 1944 , Mackerye End (Hertfordshire)

A dog stands guard over his property.

Amateur filmmaker and cinema historian H.A.V. Bulleid adopts a playful tone in this tale of a dog guarding his modest manor. In the hamlet of Mackerye End, a dog named Joe stands sentry over a farm house, guarding the livestock, patrolling the kitchen garden and seeing off the farm cats. After taking a post-lunch siesta - with one eye open, of course - Joe encounters a strange dog, chasing him out of the yard and into the fields. Reflecting on his love of the countryside, he returns to his sentry post where he remains ever protective of his patch.
