Cat no. 9406
The Lord Mayor of Norwich attends two ceremonies in the city.
Record of a ceremony to close London Street in central Norwich, an act of council which would see it become the very first fully-pedestrianised street in Britain. The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Mr. C.H. Sutton, accompanied by his wife and other dignitaries and attendees, arrives at the southern end of London Street, where a white ribbon had been placed, with a gap in the middle. An introduction is made and the Lord Mayor makes his speech, before he and his wife perform a ceremonial tying of the ribbon to signify the closing of the street to traffic, and its opening to pedestrians. Afterwards, the ceremonial party walk up London Street. Elsewhere in the city, the Lord Mayor attends a civic ceremony to mark the demolition of a hotel.
