Amateur filmmaker Joyce Allingham captures the Tolleshunt D’Arcy coronation celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II, June 2nd, 1953.

Part One: Opening with still images of Queen Elizabeth during the Coronation, the film then switches to shots of Tolleshunt D’Arcy as preparations begin for the Coronation celebrations. Several local landmarks are captured in Allingham’s film, including St. Nicholas’s Church, the post office, the Queen’s Head, the Red Lion, the Thatcher’s Arms, and D’Arcy Motors. Local residents pose for the camera, including the local baker whose shop front is adorned with bunting, Union Jacks, and coronation-themed bread. Other locals adorn the front of their homes with decorations, many posing to be filmed by Allingham. Joyce’s sister, famed novelist Margery Allingham, is joined by her husband Philip Youngman Carter outside their home in South Street. Local residents are also filmed arriving at the local church. Part Two: A poster advertises the Coronation celebrations held in the grounds of D’Arcy House, home of Margery Allingham. Locals exit the Town Hall which hosted the television broadcast of the Coronation. A procession of floats passes through the village square before gathering at D’Arcy House. The festivities continue with fancy dress competitions, games, and sports.
