Holiday

1936 , Southwold (Suffolk)

Record of the Tonge family's seaside holiday in Southwold, Suffolk.

The Tonge family from Newmarket visit the seaside at Southwold, where they race hand-powered pedal boats across the boating lake, with a young boy proving to be the fastest. A smaller group decide to race backwards, but they're interrupted by someone in a small rowing boat, as family members continue to row boats back and forth across the lake. On the beach, the children play in the waves, and all attempt to sit on an inflatable 'lilo' mattress to catch a wave, with Southwold Pier in the background. Several attempts see many of the children knocked over by waves. The film concludes with a visit to the amusement arcade where family members ride on Water Dodgem boats.
