Cheshunt Grammar School
1959 , Cheshunt (Hertfordshire)
Cat no. 7258
A celebration of Cheshunt Grammar School in its twenty-first year.
The film shows how the school has developed since its establishment in 1938, how it functions today and how it celebrates its 21st birthday. A brief history of the school is outlined, illustrating successive jumps in student numbers and the eventual need for expansion. In increasingly cramped surrounds, students are taught in and out of the classroom, in science laboratories and shown studying in the school library and eating in the dining hall. Subsequent building improvement works are shown, including the construction of the Assembly Hall and Science block in 1956 and an additional classroom block in 1958. Classroom activities are highlighted with the students conducting experiments in the science laboratories, watching educational films and creating various ceramic objects in a pottery class. Extracurricular activities are also shown through the schools many clubs and societies, from chess and debating to photography, model railways and a Scout group. A further development in this 21st year of Cheshunt Grammar School is the promise of a new outdoor swimming pool, which took over four months to construct, with a heavy contingent of students helping out in various roles. The film concludes with celebrations at the end of the school year, including the official 21st Birthday Celebration at St Mary's Church, the school dance and, of course, a chance to make the most of the summer sun (and all their hard work) in the newly built swimming pool.
