Promenaders
1970s , Frinton-on-Sea (Essex)
Cat no. 6864
Short film by Joan Hammond depicting visitors to a seaside promenade.
The film opens with a hand drawn picture of two children and the title ‘Promenaders.’ Accompanied by a soundtrack consisting of waves crashing on the beach and the voices of passers-by, the film documents life on the promenade in a coastal town. Hammond’s film captures families playing on the beach, sunbathers, swimmers, and dogs and their owners strolling down the promenade. Friends and families eat and drink whilst sat in their deck chairs. Signs reading ‘No Cycling’ and ‘Dog Restricting Area’ are ironical interposed with shots of dog walkers and cyclists traversing the promenade. The final scenes show people packing up their belongings and walking away from the beach.
