Prince of Wales Visit to Luton

1926 , Luton (Bedfordshire)

The visit of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales to Luton.

Local newsreel. Banners and bunting on the exterior of the Palace Theatre, Luton display ‘Welcome to the Prince of Wales’. A poster announces that ‘the official film’ of the visit will be shown at the theatre. A military band and troops are on parade at the railway station; excited schoolchildren energetically wave their handkerchiefs. The Prince of Wales arrives at the station and inspects the guard of honour. The royal entourage proceeds through the town by car via the waving crowds. At the football ground, drums and standards are placed on the field and the Prince takes the salute. Along the royal route, war veterans resplendent with medals are gathered for inspection. The Prince chats to individual veterans and dignitaries lead the cheering as the Prince proceeds to the football ground. Further shots of the football field. The clergy are in attendance and the Prince of Wales inspects the military band. There is a presentation of drums and colours, with the clergy leading the dedication. A march past follows and then the new drums are presented to the bandsmen. A film camera on tripod is seen in some of the shots.

Background Information

The royal visit was to mark the Jubilee of the Incorporation of the Borough of Luton. The film was received in a film laboratory bag marked "Note: Out of order". There does seem to be some repetition in the scenes of the drumhead service. This could be checked by comparison with the order of events on the day. See Cat. 226549 for offcuts of some of these scenes and additional scenes of the parade.
