The Hollow Tooth

c. 1948

A comedic cautionary tale about tooth decay and dental denial.

A man sits in a chair reading 'The Great Book for Boys'. Lowering the book to reveal a bandage wrapped around his head, the man is clearly suffering from a severe toothache. Frustrated with the pain, he goes to his wife, who attempts to extract the problem tooth with a giant pair of pliers. Scared, the man backs out, returning to his chair and his book. Taking a different tack, the man ties a coin to one end of a piece of string and the other to his tooth, dangling it out the window to tempt passing children to pull the string. With the children unable to reach the coin, a man pulls on it, breaking the string and failing to extract the tooth. Extremely frustrated and with every other tactic failed, the man puts on his hat and coat and heads for the local dentist. An injection and a quick pull later and the man exits the surgery with a smile.
