Carnival
1948 - 1972 , Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Cat no. 6201
Amateur filmmaker Charles Scott documents a family visit to Great Yarmouth’s Pleasure Beach, carnival parade, and Butlins resort.
On a sunny day at the fairground, two ladies, in a fit of giggles, pose for the camera, in front of a perspex-encased lifesize mechanical puppet. Activity of family members on the fairground rides at Great Yarmouth’s Pleasure Beach, including a “Billy Mannings Galloper” – a merry-go-round. As a passenger, Scott films from a rollercoaster carriage showing the view of the journey going up an incline; and again from a ferris wheel carriage, capturing the view below of the boating lake, seafront and visitors. Back on the ground, two teenage girls rock-n-roll dance together. Scott captures family members on the helter-skelter, walking along the seafront, and enjoying a picnic on the grass. In the town centre, a parade takes place in the street, featuring sequence dancing and a Salvation Army brass band. A woman reads a Butlins Entertainment Programme. Teenagers rollerskate at an outdoor ring; families splash about and dive in the water at the lido; people participate in party games instructed by ‘red coats’ – members of the entertainment staff at Butlins. Activity at the “Kiddies Corner”; the rollercoaster; ballroom dancing; and at the Austrian Alps-themed bar with waitress wearing dirndl costume. An title card reads "Summertime in Coltishall 1972" followed by activity of many children by the lake. Three children are featured carrying fishing equipment. A view of the lake, a boat, and family at sunset.
