1939 - 1944

A collection of home movies shot by Charles Scott.

Setting out for their 1939 holiday during the onset of another inevitable European conflict, the Scott family pack their cases and pile into the car. Heading north from Norwich, they visit the Boston Stump - the towering spire of St Botolph's Church in Lincolnshire - before heading to the beach at Skegness, where they play cricket, ride donkeys and take a boat trip. Continuing their holiday in central England, they visit the architecture of Warwick and Leicester, the Northamptonshire villages of Fotheringhay and Geddington, the Corby steel works and the Welland Viaduct, before returning home via Lincoln where they visit the Cathedral. The family's return to Norwich is met with grim news, as the Allied forces begin their blockade of Germany. The Scott family forego their 1940 holiday, but take a day trip to Watford, stopping for lunch at the Elveden War Memorial in Suffolk. Moving to King's Lynn in 1941, family members pose in the backyard of their new home. The following year, the Scott family visit a friend's farm in Upwell, where they are surrounded by farm animals and ride horses. 1943 brings a 'brighter outlook' with many newspapers reporting Allied gains in Europe, visits from friends and leading up to a family wedding in 1944, where they gather to watch the happy couple cut their cake.
