BBC East programme on the Grand Restoration of Ely Cathedral.

BBC East profiles the Grand Restoration of 'one of the great architectural treasures of the Western world', Ely Cathedral. Work is underway to check, assess and, where necessary, repair damaged elements throughout the building. Wooden beams, integral to the cathedral's structure, are repaired and replaced under the supervision of architectural consultants and structural engineers. The restoration also sees the continuation of a long relationship between the cathedral and Cambridgeshire masonry firm Rattee & Kett, whose co-founder James Rattee, carved the cathedral's elaborate wooden reredos alterpiece in the 1840s. Other sections of work being carried out include the refacing of the eastern end, the restoration of the Lady Chapel and the conservation of the Nave Ceiling, painted by Henry Styleman Le Strange and Thomas Gambier Parry. The programme concludes with the involvement of local children, who helped raised some of the money required for the restoration and are writing their names onto the new wooden beams which will probably grace the cathedral for centuries to come.
