Profile of surrealist and theatrical photographer and eccentric Suffolk resident, Angus McBean, introduced and narrated by arts journalist, Sheridan Morley. Footage of Angus McBean in the grounds of his home, with commentary by Sheridan Morley emphasizing McBean’s eccentric persona and detailing his enviable career as a West End photographer. A montage of stills follow; a photo of the artist, both comic and surrealist in tone, typical of McBean’s style; and, publicity stills of glamorous film stars - Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn – all photographed by McBean. At his Bedingfield home, McBean welcomes the viewer, and shows off the Italian-style art nouveau entrance gates, before working on the exterior wall. Scene changes are marked by the sound effect click of a camera shutter. McBean composes a Christmas card design, photographed by and featuring himself at his home. McBean shows the viewer the recent commission received by and for Helmingham Hall in Suffolk. Exterior and interior footage of McBean’s antiques shop, the former Guildhall, at Debenham. McBean chats to a customer. Finally, inside McBean’s home, Fleming Hall, again featuring his work, this time, the interior design of his study, and focusing on its illusionary features.
