A BBC documentary examining the changing face of Norwich.

Documentary on Norwich, examining the evolving city centre via archival film and interviews. Formerly home to the cattle market, the old castle bailey represents the changing face of Norwich as its use as a car park is soon to give way to the force of conservation. The programme traces debates about preservation and conservation in Norwich, beginning with the formation of the Norwich Society in 1923, which fought to save the medieval Bishop Bridge from a road-widening scheme. Since then, Norwich has seen heated debates over the conservation of Elm Hill, but also the progress gained by the construction of an inner ring road and of City Hall. Greatly affected during the war, when 44 separate German raids spread incendiary bombs across the city, Norwich emerged as a newly cosmopolitan city, and conservation continued in areas such as Tombland. In the late 1950s, the Civic Trust was responsible for the rejuvenation of Magdalen Street, but coming decades would see the construction of a flyover and the new shopping precinct of Anglia Square, which would alter the whole character of the area. The reutilization of decommissioned churches for arts centres and puppet theatres has ensured a form of living conservation, and problems of traffic still threaten to divide the city.
