Traditional opening of the oyster season at Brightlingsea.

At Brightlingsea on the beach and on boats along the River Colne, a crowd has gathered to watch the civic dignitaries in their regalia observe the traditional proclamation by the Town Clerk of Colchester of the opening of the oyster season. After a celebratory drink, the oysters are swallowed. Oysters are taken from a full basket and the shells opened with a knife, to be laid out on plates for the guests. A large party in a rowing boat watch the hauling in of a net.
