Failed Experiments to Locate Shoals of Herring

1960 , Lowestoft (Suffolk)

Anglia Television report on failed attempts to use echo-sounding to locate fish stocks.

Attempts to locate shoals of herring using radar plotters have proved unsuccessful, with fishery laboratories recording echo soundings from their two research vessels in the North Sea failing to convince local fisherman of their worth. Dr. David Cushing, director of the scheme, talks about some of the reasons for failure, admitting that many of the herring-boat skippers prefer to trust their own instincts over experimental scientific methods which only prove to be right fifty per cent of the time. The report concludes with a mute segment featuring many of the Lowestoft-based skippers who took part in the experiments.
